Opulent and elegant, this 'mini Super Tuscan' matches many Italian reds at twice the price Saracosa is inspired by the 'Super Tuscans' first developed by Antinori in the 1970s. These wines kick started the region's renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the hot 2011 vintage, "Montepulciano, with its deeper soils (and) Montalcino with late ripening Sangiovese fared the best" (winespectator.com), and Saracosa's old vines delivered impressively concentrated fruit. Dense, dark cherry and chocolaty tones make this an inspired choice for pasta with a pork ragù or bistecca alla Fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).
